TALAT PHLU FOOD TOUR

If you are craving tasty food while working from home, your taste buds will surely be satisfied at Talat Phlu in Thon Buri. While the Yaowarat food tour is already well-known among visitors to Thailand, Talat Phlu has long been a well-loved venue for local foodies, especially Thon Buri residents. And now that both the MRT and BTS have been extended further into the suburbs, visiting Talat Phlu is quick and easy.

If you take the BTS, get off at Talat Plu Station and use Exit 2. You can either walk about a kilometre or take a motorcycle taxi to Talat Phlu. The area for this food tour is on Thoet Thai Road, especially around Talat Phlu Train Station in Thoet Thai Soi 25. All the food stalls and shops are within walking distance of each other and easy to find. Our list is only a suggestion, so feel free to venture further on your own. The night food market is also in this area if you come late in the afternoon. A queue of locals in front of any stalls or shops is usually a good guide. Bon appétit!

This is the most famous fish maw soup in Talat Phlu and has been around for more than 50 years. However, don’t expect to see fish maw, as this stall uses dried pork rind, but the soup is every bit as thick and delicious. Make sure to arrive earlier as it sells out fast. The stall is located at Talat Phlu Railway Station and opens at 10 a.m.

If you’re a fan of Khao Mu Dang or roasted red pork in gravy with rice, Sunee’s stall shouldn’t be missed.
.
Another reputable stall that’s been around for more than 60 years, the roasted pork here has a smoky flavour and lots of juicy gravy. And sitting by the railway adds to the unique culinary experience.
.

Muai Li’s Itim Khai Khaeng – frozen egg ice cream
.
Just a few steps from Sunee’s stall is another famous name that has been in business for more than 60 years, in fact even longer than Sunee’s.
.
To make this unusual sweet treat, a raw egg yolk is mixed with the solid coconut ice cream a few moments before it is scooped into a serving bowl so the egg yolk is frozen by the ice cream.
.
It’s surprisingly appetising and you can also choose a number of toppings to go with your scoops. Come and try it yourself!

Suriya’s 100-year-old coffee
.
This small coffee shop is located under the bridge, right at the bus stop, and usually draws locals for their daily coffee fix.
.
It’s the third branch of a family business that is now run by the third generation. Three siblings take turns overseeing Suriya, which was started some 100 years ago by their grandfather at Talat Wat Klang near Talat Phlu. This is a very affordable local coffee shop with prices starting from a mere 15 Baht.

We tried Oliang Thai iced coffee and gave it a thumbs up for bringing back happy childhood memories. The shop is especially proud of its tea, claiming it uses premium tea leaves but sells the drinks to customers at a very affordable price

Jay Bi’s Pho Phia Sot – fresh spring rolls
.
Stroll further along, and you will see a small vendor selling fresh spring rolls. Jay Bi’s spring rolls are in the same league as the fare served by those famous names that have been around for more than 60 years. A cheerful vendor is also a draw to this stall.

Its tasty home-made Chinese sausages and tofu help distinguish Jay Bi’s recipe from the rest. There’s a small seating area at the stall if you’re not ordering to go.

Yai Fai’s Khanom Buang Yuan – Thai style Vietnamese crispy crepe
.
Khanom Buang Yuan at this stall is slightly different – the batter is mixed with a beaten egg and the crepe is wrapped like a Thai style roti instead of being folded in half. We came across this stall on the pavement while on our way toward Thoet Thai Soi 20.
.
It’s really crispy but before having a bite, be careful … the filling can be piping hot!

Jay Oy’s Mee Khachet – stir-fried noodles with water mimosa

Even though we arrived after lunch time at around 1 p.m. as suggested by those in the know, we still had to wait for about an hour to try the famous stir-fried water mimosa noodles.

But the luck was still on our side as our noodles were the stall’s last order for this popular dish. It was worth the wait, the noodles were delicious and the veggies tender.
.
There are other tasty dishes on its menu if you miss the water mimosa noodles, but for us they’re the star of this stall.

LYNX Specialty Coffee
.
The Talat Phlu food tour ends at this contemporary coffee shop, about 200 metres from Jay Oy’s stall, which is a good distance to walk while digesting the food you’ve eaten so far.

The coffee shop’s beans are sourced from around the world, and its home-made cakes and pastries are delicious. Yuzu rare (no-bake) cheesecake is highly recommended. LYNX Specialty Coffee is a place to relax in comfort after the non-stop street food journey before heading home.
